These states will pay you to build a tiny home in your backyard

Who can apply: Homeowners earning up to 165% of the area median income — $186,450 for a two-person household — are eligible. Preference will be given to those earning at or below 100% of the AMI, which is $113,000 for a two-person household.

Marni Leiken used a $20,000 grant from the Vermont State Housing Authority and a $10,000 no-interest loan to build an apartment above the carriage barn in her backyard.

The single mom, who works as a university administrator, rents out the apartment to help pay off her mortgage.

“For Vermont, which is very expensive, it made being here financially possible,” Leiken previously told BI.
