7 shows to watch next if you enjoyed ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’

In “Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story,” Nicholas Chavez plays Lyle Menendez, Chloë Sevigny plays Kitty Menendez, Javier Bardem plays Jose Menendez, and Cooper Koch plays Erik Menendez.

  • “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” has topped Netflix’s streaming chart.
  • Fans of the series will likely enjoy its predecessor, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”
  • “When They See Us” and “Candy” are also good shows to watch next.

Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is the streamer’s latest true crime hit.

After the success of “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which won multiple Emmys and is the third most-watched English language series on Netflix, the streamer gave the green light for co-creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan to develop more limited series about high-profile killers.

The second season tells the story of two brothers, Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez, who were handed life sentences for killing their parents in 1989. A week since it was released, it has topped the Netflix streaming chart.

True crime is a major genre for Netflix and other streamers, with shows like “Monster” and “Baby Reindeer” sparking huge conversations.

Netflix has already renewed the series for a third season, where Charlie Hunham will play the serial killer Ed Gein.

Here are some other shows to watch in the meantime.

“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”
Nathan Lane, David Schwimmer, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Courtney B. Vance in “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.”

Murphy already had a hit crime anthology series before “Monsters” with “American Crime Story.”

Each season focused on a different famous crime from the last century and featured major Hollywood stars, including Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown, David Schwimmer, and John Travolta.

Like “Monsters,” the first two seasons, based on O.J. Simpson’s trial and the assassination of Gianni Versace, are about high-profile murders.

The first three seasons of “American Crime Story” are available to stream on Hulu.

“When They See Us”
Elle Fanning as Michelle Carter in Hulu’s “The Girl from Plainville.”

Based on what’s dubbed the “texting suicide case,” Elle Fanning plays Michelle Carter, a teenager who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after her friend Conrad Roy took his life in 2015.

Carter sent multiple messages to Roy, persuading him to kill himself. She was on the phone to Roy when he died, but didn’t contact the authorities to save him.

Chloë Sevigny, who played the mother of the Menendez brothers in”Monsters,” appears in this miniseries as Roy’s mother, whom Carter attempted to bond with after his death.

The Girl from Plainville” takes an interesting approach to adapting the text messages by showing them as in-person conversations between Roy and Fanning.

“The Girl from Plainville” is a limited series available to stream on Peacock.

“The Staircase”
Jessica Biel played Candy Montgomery in the Hulu drama “Candy.”

In 2022 and 2023, Hulu and HBO Max both released separate true crime shows about Candy Montgomery, who in 1980 murdered her neighbor Betty Gore after she found out Montgomery was sleeping with her husband.

Critics and fans agree Hulu “Candy” was the better of the two. “Candy” is more of a psychological thriller than most true crime series.

Critics praised Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey’s performances as Montgomery and Gore, respectively, with the latter nominated for an Emmy.

“Candy” is a limited series available to stream on Hulu.

“Welcome to Chippendales”
Kumail Nanjiani played Somen “Steve” Banerjee in Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales.”

In “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” the Menendez brother’s father, José Menendez, is obsessed with the American dream. But this obsession eventually harms those around him when he verbally and physically abuses his family who don’t live up to expectations.

Welcome to Chippendales” explores similar themes. Kumail Nanjiani plays Somen “Steve” Banerjee, who rose to fame in the 1980s after founding the first male strip troupe in the US but lost everything when he was charged with murder, arson, and plotting murder.

“Welcome to Chippendales” is a limited series available to stream on Hulu.
