Tom Holland has reportedly been cast in Christopher Nolan‘s next movie, which fans hope will help him launch a career outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Holland’s appearance as Spider-Man in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War” and the Marvel movies that followed saw him achieve international fame.

Fans have debated why the actor hasn’t had major success outside Spider-Man. Holland’s only other big win unrelated to the franchise was 2022’s “Uncharted,” which received mixed reviews from critics but became one of six video game movie adaptations to make more than $400 million at the global box office.

The debate was reignited on Monday when The Hollywood Reporter reported, without citing a source, that Holland would star alongside Matt Damon in Nolan’s next movie. Deadline reported that Nolan is in talks with Holland.

The plot and the rest of the cast have not been announced, but it will reportedly premiere on July 17, 2026.

A representative for Universal did not immediately respond to a comment request from Business Insider.

Fans rejoiced at the news, with some saying it would be a “career boost” for Holland.

Fans were excited because Nolan has a track record for making hugely successful films and helping actors gain recognition.

“Oppenheimer,” Nolan’s last movie, was the third highest-grossing film in 2023, making $975 million at the global box office.

It was also the biggest winner at this year’s Oscars, claiming seven awards, including first wins for lead actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr., and a nomination for Emily Blunt, who was a supporting lead actor in the film.

Heath Ledger, who died in 2008, won his Oscar for Nolan’s 2008 film “The Dark Knight.”

Anne Hathaway told Vanity Fair in March that Nolan kept her career afloat in the 2010s by casting her in 2014’s “Interstellar” amid a major social media backlash known as “Hathahate.”

“I don’t know if he knew that he was backing me at the time, but it had that effect. And my career did not lose momentum the way it could have if he hadn’t backed me,” Hathaway said.
