The Tesla Model Y is the world’s most popular electric vehicle.

  • The Tesla Model Y is surging in popularity.
  • In 2023, it was recognized as the world’s best-selling vehicle. It leads the market again in 2024.
  • Here’s what to know about the Tesla Model Y’s price, features, and range before buying.

When we say the Model Y is the reigning champ as the world’s best-selling vehicle, we’re not talking about just electric cars here.

The Tesla Model Y beat out beloved, gas-powered rides like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda Accord to become the world’s most popular model — period — in all of 2023, according to data compiled by market research firm JATO Dynamics. And it’s on track to be the winner again in 2024.

Here’s what to know if you’re in the market for a Model Y.

Across the lineup, you get respectable range, a minimalist cabin, lots of cargo space, and the dazzling technology that Tesla is known for. The Model Y Long Range has a $2,000, seven-seat option for larger families.

Range is one of the biggest considerations for EV buyers, and the Model Y’s Environmental Protection Agency estimates are as follows: 279 miles for the base SUV, 330 miles for the Long Range, and 303 for the Performance.

All Teslas are known for their speedy acceleration and athletic handling, but the Performance version kicks things up a notch. With it you get a lowered suspension, upgraded brakes, and more power. Tesla says it can scoot to 60 mph in a brief 3.5 seconds.

The Model Y is eligible for the new federal EV tax credit.

Yes. Buyers can get a $7,500 tax credit on Model Y purchases if they don’t exceed income caps of $150,000 per year for individuals, $225,000 for heads of households, or $300,000 for married couples.

Does Tesla sell a bigger SUV?

The Tesla Model X SUV is quite a bit larger and more expensive. It’s closer to the top of Tesla’s price range, with a starting price tag of $77,990. It’s available with five, six, or seven seats.

It has slightly more range than the Model Y, sporting an EPA estimate of 348 miles. It’s also the only SUV you can buy with wacky, falcon-wing doors that swing upward, making the Model X look like some kind of four-wheeled spaceship.
